CCUW Women United: December 2023 Newsletter

Tis' the season...

Hope you all had a bountiful Thanksgiving and are ready to enjoy the abundance of December holidays – Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Don’t overlook the Winter Solstice, December 21, when the days begin – slowly at first – to get longer. And it’s wrapped up with New Year’s Eve and Day. December's newsletter much like the month itself, brings some heartwarming updates and opportunities.

Women United: Afterhours at the Rivet Recap

We had an entertaining After Hours event at The Rivet on November 14. Rivet staff member Viktorija. provided guidance on ways to decorate our small ring, key, or change dishes, and we had a variety of items to work with to create designs or texture. The Rivet staff took care of the firing and glazing, and we are able to pick up our creations at the Centre County United Way offices soon!

After our work with the clay, we snacked and heard from Jen Pencek, Executive Director of Center Safe, about the work of Centre Safe in supporting those who have dealt with dating or domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking, or those who may have concerns for loved ones who may be in those situations. Opportunities exist to support Center Safe https://www.centresafe.org/ through volunteering, financial contributions, or just increasing awareness about the services the organization can provide.

Holiday Gift Cards for Child Access Center

The Child Access Center is a component of Centre Safe, and it is not too late to make a pledge to support the Centre Safe holiday campaign and provide funds for the holiday gift cards for Child Access Center client families. This year the Center is working with 44 adults and 35 children in 26 families. The goal is to be able to provide each with a $50 gift card for the holidays. That totals a goal of $3,950 for the 2023 holiday season.
We currently have $400 total pledged with $3,550 needed to meet our goal!
Will you contribute to this support?
At this time, we are asking for a pledge, not a check. Please send the amount of your pledge to Ja Nae at [email protected] or Barbara at [email protected]. Gift cards are distributed to families the second week of December, so we will need your pledges as soon as possible. Once you make your pledge we will provide instruction on how to submit payment.

Grant Project Update:

Children's Space at the Courthouse

In July, The Makery of Central Pennsylvania was the recipient of a $6,350 Women United Grant for the Centre County Courthouse Children’s Space.

The need for this space was confirmed by staff from the Youth Service Bureau, the Courthouse, and other organizations. It was proposed to be an alternative for children and teens having to wait in the hallways of the Courthouse, providing them instead with a peaceful, secure waiting space. Courthouse staff identified available space and grant funds were provided to be used to renovate the identified space and acquire some of the furnishings.

The Makery team wasted no time executing the project. On October 31, 2023 the team finished the final touches, as you can see from these before and after photos. It is a vast improvement! Now there is a warm and inviting place for children and young adults to wait while participating in court proceedings.

There will be a dedication ceremony today, December 6th to unveil the new space and dedication plaque acknowledging Women United for their support of the project.

The Makery and partners are seeking support in helping stock the room with books and toys. To help these efforts they have indentified items needed and provided 2 links for the purchase of wishlist items.
